On January 19th, 2024, the Professorship for Adult and Continuing Education of the University of Würzburg will organize a hybrid workshop on "Researching Gender in Adult Education" as part of the guest professorship of Prof. Dr. Natália Alves.
The workshop will be supported by contributions of various international experts from the field.
Researching Gender in Adult Education
The workshop by Prof.'in Dr. Natália Alves aims to bring together some adult education researchers who have been paying particular attention to gender topics. Gender has become an important research topic in educational sciences in general and adult education in particular. Strongly influenced by feminist movements, a ‘first wave’ of research in adult education focuses on women's unequal access to formal education and their learning careers. A ‘second wave’, indebted to studies on masculinities, began to focus attention not only on women but also on men and their learning processes. More recently, a ‘third wave’ seeks to overcome the traditional male-female dichotomy by extending research to a hitherto invisible group of adults: the members of LGBTI communities. The presentations in this workshop are illustrative of these three waves and show the plurality of perspectives on gender in adult education.
